What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What does the equation I = Anev describe?
Define number density, and describe conductors, and metals in particular, in terms of their number density of charge carriers.
What is the SI unit of electric charge?
What is the value of the elementary charge e?
What charge does an electron carry?
How is electric current defined?
What charge does a proton carry?
Define mean drift velocity.
Take Charge and Current further
The same content, four other ways.
Commonly confused
Pairs that lose marks when they are blurred together.
Electron flow vs Conventional current
Electron flow: movement of negative charge from lower to higher potential. Conventional current: defined flow of positive charge from higher to lower potential.
Number density vs Mean drift velocity
Number density: number of charge carriers per unit volume. Mean drift velocity: average velocity of charge carriers along the conductor.
Electric current vs Potential difference
Electric current: rate of flow of charge. Potential difference: energy transferred per unit charge between two points in a circuit.
Questions from this topic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
How is electric current defined?
Model answer
Electric current is defined as the rate of flow of charge.
- 2
State the equation that relates current, charge and time.
Model answer
I = Q/t, where I is current, Q is charge and t is time.
- 3
In the equation I = Q/t, what does each symbol represent?
Model answer
I represents current, Q represents charge, and t represents time.
- 4
What is the SI unit of electric charge?
Model answer
The coulomb (C).
- 5
Define one coulomb.
Model answer
One coulomb is the charge transferred when a current of one ampere flows for one second.
- 6
State the equation used to calculate charge from current and time.
Model answer
Q = It, where Q is charge, I is current, and t is time.

Charge and Current revision questions
- What does Charge and Current cover in OCR A-Level Physics A?
- 3 subtopics: electric current and the coulomb, elementary charge, charge carriers and kirchhoff's first law and mean drift velocity. Each one has its own page with questions and model answers.
- How is Charge and Current organised?
- By the OCR H556 specification, subtopic by subtopic, so it matches the order you are taught it in.
Every question in Charge and Current, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
