Nature of Quantities
- 2 subtopics
- 6 things to know
- All three papers
What Nature of Quantities covers
The distinction that runs through the whole course: which quantities carry direction and which do not, and how vectors are added and resolved.
Where it is assessed

What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Are force, distance and velocity scalar or vector quantities?
What two properties define a vector quantity?
How is vector subtraction performed?
What defines a scalar quantity?
How can a vector triangle be used to find the resultant of two coplanar vectors?

Pairs that lose marks when they are blurred together.
Scalar quantity vs Vector quantity
Scalar quantity: a quantity with magnitude only. Vector quantity: a quantity with both magnitude and direction.
Distance vs Displacement
Distance: the total path length travelled, taking no account of direction. Displacement: the straight-line separation from start to finish, in a stated direction.
Speed vs Velocity
Speed: the rate of change of the path length travelled. Velocity: the rate of change of position in a stated direction.
