Circular Motion
Centripetal force and acceleration
- 4 things to know
- Papers 1, 2 and 3
Overview
Recall questions on why a perpendicular force causes circular motion, centripetal acceleration and centripetal force in terms of speed and angular velocity with calculations, and the whirling bung experiment.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Give the formula for centripetal acceleration in terms of linear speed v and radius r.
Why does a constant net force acting perpendicular to an object's velocity cause circular motion?
For an object moving in a circle at constant speed, what remains constant and what continuously changes?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is centripetal acceleration and in which direction does it act?
Model answer
Centripetal acceleration is the acceleration of an object in circular motion; it is directed towards the centre of the circular path.
- 2
Why does a constant net force acting perpendicular to an object's velocity cause circular motion?
Model answer
The perpendicular force continuously changes the direction of the velocity without changing its magnitude, causing the object to follow a circular path.
- 3
For an object moving in a circle at constant speed, what remains constant and what continuously changes?
Model answer
Angular velocity (and speed) remain constant, but the direction of the velocity continuously changes.
- 4
Give the formula for centripetal acceleration in terms of linear speed v and radius r.
Model answer
a = v²/r
- 5
Calculate the centripetal acceleration when linear speed = 13.5 m s⁻¹, radius = 6.9 m.
Model answer
Centripetal acceleration = (13.5 × 13.5) ÷ 6.9 = 26.4 m s⁻².
- 6
State the equation for centripetal acceleration using angular velocity ω and radius r.
Model answer
a = ω²r

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Circular Motion, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
