- 2 things to know
- Papers 1, 2 and 3
Overview
The five levels, what each covers at work, and why lower needs must be met first.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is self-actualisation, and what does Maslow say about reaching higher needs?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What are physiological needs in Maslow's hierarchy and where do they sit in the model?
Model answer
Physiological needs are the most basic human requirements for survival, such as food, water, shelter and warmth. They form the bottom level of the hierarchy and must be satisfied first before any other needs become motivating.
- 2
Explain what safety needs represent in Maslow's hierarchy and why they only become motivating after physiological needs are met.
Model answer
Safety needs include security, stability, protection from harm, and job security. According to Maslow's theory, these only become motivating factors once basic physiological needs are satisfied, as humans prioritise survival before seeking security.
- 3
What are social needs in Maslow's hierarchy and how might an employer address them?
Model answer
Social needs include belonging, friendship, love, and being part of a group. Employers can address these through teamwork, social events, and creating a positive workplace culture where employees feel accepted and included.
- 4
Define esteem needs and explain their position in Maslow's hierarchy.
Model answer
Esteem needs include recognition, respect, achievement, status and self-confidence. They sit at the fourth level of the hierarchy, meaning they only become motivating once physiological, safety and social needs have been satisfied.
- 5
What is self-actualisation in Maslow's hierarchy and why is it placed at the top?
Model answer
Self-actualisation is the need to reach one's full potential, achieve personal growth and fulfil one's capabilities. It sits at the top because it only becomes a motivating factor once all four lower-level needs have been satisfied.
- 6
Why does Maslow's theory suggest that offering promotion opportunities may not motivate an employee who feels isolated at work?
Model answer
According to Maslow, needs must be satisfied in order. Promotion addresses esteem needs, but if an employee's social needs (belonging, friendship) are unmet, they will not be motivated by higher-level rewards until those social needs are first satisfied.
