- 3 things to know
- Components 01, 02 and 03
Overview
Recall questions on the mean, median, mode and range, calculating standard deviation, correlation and causation, and choosing and interpreting the t-test and Spearman's rank correlation coefficient.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What does standard deviation measure?
What types of correlation can a scattergram show?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Calculate the mean number of stomata per field of view when the counts are 12, 15, 9, 14 and 10.
Model answer
Mean = (12 + 15 + 9 + 14 + 10) ÷ 5 = 60 ÷ 5 = 12.
- 2
Define the median and the mode of a set of data.
Model answer
The median is the middle value when the data are placed in rank order; the mode is the value that occurs most often.
- 3
Find the mean, median and mode of seedling heights of 4, 5, 5, 6 and 20 cm.
Model answer
Mean = 40 ÷ 5 = 8 cm; median = 5 cm; mode = 5 cm.
- 4
Why is the median sometimes a better average than the mean?
Model answer
The median is not pulled towards an extreme value, so it better represents data that contain an outlier or are skewed.
- 5
What does the range of a data set show, and what is its limitation?
Model answer
The range, the largest value minus the smallest, shows the spread of the data, but it depends only on the two extreme values, so a single outlier distorts it.
- 6
What does standard deviation measure?
Model answer
The spread of data about the mean; a small standard deviation shows that values are clustered closely around the mean.
