Overview

Recall questions on independent, dependent and control variables, controls, valid methods, the range and number of values to test, choosing apparatus, risk assessment, and the ethical use of living organisms and people.

Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

What is the difference between the independent, dependent and control variables in an investigation?

    Model answer

The independent variable is the one the investigator deliberately changes, the dependent variable is the one measured in response, and control variables are kept constant so that only the independent variable affects the result.

  2. 2

Why is a respirometer containing glass beads instead of living organisms set up alongside the experimental respirometer?

    Model answer

It is a control: any volume change in it is caused by temperature or pressure changes rather than respiration, which shows that the change in the experimental tube is caused by the organisms.

  3. 3

What makes an experimental method valid?

    Model answer

A valid method measures what it is intended to measure, so it answers the aim by changing only the independent variable while every other variable that could affect the result is controlled.

  4. 4

How can you judge whether an experimental method is appropriate to meet its expected outcomes?

    Model answer

Check that it measures the dependent variable directly with apparatus of suitable resolution, uses a wide enough range of values of the independent variable, controls the other variables, and includes repeats and a control.

  5. 5

Why should at least five values of the independent variable be tested in an investigation?

    Model answer

Five or more values allow a trend to be seen and a line or curve of best fit to be drawn with confidence.

  6. 6

Why are repeat readings taken at each value of the independent variable?

    Model answer

Repeats allow a mean to be calculated, anomalous readings to be spotted, and the spread of the results to show how precise the data are.
