Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define the term alternative representation.
Model answer
An alternative representation is one that departs from the dominant version of a group or issue in mainstream media, offering a different selection of detail and a different set of values.
- 2
Explain how The Big Issue represents homeless people differently from most news media.
Model answer
It represents them as workers, readers and individuals with histories and opinions, rather than as a social problem observed from the outside.
- 3
What is self-representation, and where does it appear in the magazine?
Model answer
Self-representation is a group speaking for itself rather than being spoken about, and the magazine carries vendors' own words and accounts of their lives.
- 4
Why is a vendor's own account a different kind of evidence from a report about vendors?
Model answer
It removes the intermediary who selects and frames, so the terms in which the experience is described are the subject's own.
- 5
How can a magazine cover make an issue of national significance visible?
Model answer
By taking a subject usually confined to the inside pages and giving it the whole of a cover, which asserts that it matters more than the day's dominant story.
- 6
What is the effect of putting a well-known figure on the cover of a magazine about social issues?
Model answer
The recognisable face attracts the passer-by and lends the title status, while the interview inside carries the magazine's concerns to readers who came for the celebrity.
