Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    Define technological convergence.

    Model answer

Technological convergence is the combining of functions that once required separate devices or industries into a single device or platform.

  2. 2

How has the smartphone changed when and where audiences consume media?

    Model answer

It has made consumption mobile, frequent and brief, so media is now used in gaps in the day and products are increasingly made short and readable on a small vertical screen.

  3. 3

    What is time-shifting?

    Model answer

Time-shifting is recording or streaming a programme so that it is watched at a time the viewer chooses rather than when it is transmitted.

  4. 4

Explain the effect of time-shifting on the power of a broadcast schedule.

    Model answer

If the audience chooses its own time, the schedule can no longer deliver viewers to advertisers reliably, so broadcasters compete instead on availability and on live events that must be watched as they happen.

  5. 5

    Define on-demand consumption.

    Model answer

On-demand consumption is the audience selecting what to watch and when from a library that is permanently available.

  6. 6

How have writers responded to the habit of binge-watching?

    Model answer

Knowing episodes will be watched consecutively, writers cut recaps and reintroductions and write story arcs that carry straight over from one episode to the next.
