Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a genre hybrid?
Model answer
A hybrid is a product that combines the conventions of two or more genres so that it belongs fully to neither, such as a comedy horror or a science fiction western.
- 2
Why do producers create hybrids?
Model answer
Hybridity offers novelty within familiarity and can draw the audiences of two genres to the same product, which makes it a way of differentiating a release in a crowded market.
- 3
What is the commercial risk of hybridising genres?
Model answer
A product that satisfies neither set of conventions can leave audiences unsure what they are being offered and is much harder to market, so it may fail to attract either of the audiences it was aimed at.
- 4
What does it mean to subvert a genre convention?
Model answer
To subvert a convention is to invoke it and then deliberately break it, so the audience's expectation is raised and then denied in a way that produces meaning.
- 5
Give an example of subverting a genre convention and state its effect.
Model answer
Staging a horror sequence in bright daylight subverts the convention that threat arrives with darkness, and the effect is to unsettle the audience by removing the safety they associate with the light.
- 6
What is the difference between subverting a convention and simply not using it?
Model answer
Subversion depends on the convention being invoked so that its absence or reversal is felt, whereas a product that never raises the expectation at all produces no such effect.
