- 3 things to know
- Components 01 and 02
Overview
Recall questions on the hypodermic needle model, desensitisation and catharsis, two-step flow and opinion leaders, reinforcement, agenda setting, moral panics, folk devils and deviancy amplification, and Gauntlett's critique of the effects model.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Give two reasons the hypodermic model is now rejected by most researchers.
What does Gauntlett argue is wrong with the starting point of the effects model?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What does the hypodermic needle model claim?
Model answer
It claims that media messages are injected directly into a passive audience, who all receive them in the same way and act on them.
- 2
Give two reasons the hypodermic model is now rejected by most researchers.
Model answer
Audiences demonstrably take different meanings from identical material, and no study has ever shown a uniform response across a whole audience.
- 3
What is desensitisation?
Model answer
Desensitisation is the reduction of shock and emotional response caused by repeated exposure to violent material, which is argued to reduce concern for real victims.
- 4
What does the catharsis argument claim about violent media?
Model answer
It claims that watching violence allows aggressive feelings to be discharged harmlessly, so exposure reduces aggression rather than increasing it.
- 5
What does the two-step flow model propose?
Model answer
It proposes that media messages reach most people indirectly, through opinion leaders who consume the media and pass their interpretation on to the people around them.
- 6
Who is an opinion leader?
Model answer
An opinion leader is a person whose judgement is trusted within a social group, so that their reading of a media message shapes how the rest of the group receives it.
