Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    What is participatory media?

    Model answer

It is media in which the audience is able to contribute, respond, share and produce content rather than only receive it, so the boundary between producer and consumer breaks down.

  2. 2

What did Shirky mean by the end of audience?

    Model answer

Shirky argued that digital tools have ended the era in which a few institutions broadcast to a silent mass, because ordinary people can now publish, organise and speak back to power at almost no cost.

  3. 3

Explain Shirky's argument that filtering now happens after publication.

    Model answer

Print required editors to select before printing because paper and presses were scarce, whereas online anyone can publish first and the audience filters afterwards by sharing, ranking and commenting.

  4. 4

What is participatory culture in Jenkins's sense?

    Model answer

Jenkins describes a culture with low barriers to expression, strong support for sharing what you create, informal mentoring, and members who believe their contributions matter and feel socially connected to each other.

  5. 5

How does Jenkins's idea of textual poaching apply to news content?

    Model answer

Jenkins argues that audiences take fragments of texts and rework them for their own purposes, which in news means screenshotting a headline, memeing a front page or cutting a clip so it argues something the publisher did not intend.

  6. 6

    What is a prosumer?

    Model answer

A prosumer is an audience member who both consumes and produces media content, such as a reader who shares a story with their own commentary attached.
