- 3 things to know
- Components 01 and 02
Overview
Recall questions on mode of address and direct address, interpellation and audience positioning, inclusive language and brand identity, how a product constructs its audience, and the audience as described by ratings and analytics.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Explain how a product can construct an audience rather than simply reach one.
How would the mode of address of a children's channel differ from that of a late-night current affairs programme?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is meant by mode of address?
Model answer
Mode of address is the way a product speaks to its audience, including its tone, register, vocabulary and how directly it talks to the reader or viewer.
- 2
What is direct address, and what effect does it create?
Model answer
Direct address is speaking straight to the audience, by looking into the camera or using the second person, and it creates intimacy and a sense of being personally included.
- 3
Define the term interpellation.
Model answer
Interpellation is the process by which a text hails its audience, inviting them to recognise themselves in the identity it offers and to accept the position it assumes they occupy.
- 4
Explain how a magazine cover line using the word your positions its reader.
Model answer
It assumes the reader already has the need the line names, so the reader is addressed as someone with that problem or ambition and is treated as one of the magazine's own.
- 5
What is audience positioning?
Model answer
Audience positioning is the arrangement of a product's elements so that the audience is encouraged to see events from a particular viewpoint and share the attitude it carries.
- 6
Explain how a product can construct an audience rather than simply reach one.
Model answer
By consistently addressing people as a certain kind of person with certain values, a product invites a scattered set of individuals to recognise themselves in that description, and the group becomes an audience by accepting it.
