Representations of diversity, disability and self-expression at River Island
- 3 things to know
- Component 01
Overview
Recall questions on how the River Island campaign represents disability, body shape, race and self-expression, positive stereotyping, inspiration porn, tokenism and commodified identity, under-representation in fashion, and how different readers interpret it.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Describe how the campaign represents body shape.
Why does representing race through casting alone attract criticism?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
How does the campaign challenge the assumption that disability and fashion do not belong together?
Model answer
It casts disabled models in an ordinary fashion advert, styled and shot exactly as the other models are, so disability appears as one difference among many rather than as the subject of the image.
- 2
What is meant by a positive use of stereotyping, and where does the risk lie?
Model answer
A positive use replaces a demeaning image with an admirable one, but it can still flatten a group into a single type, so an inspirational disabled model can be as limiting as a pitiable one.
- 3
Explain the criticism known as inspiration porn.
Model answer
It is the charge that disabled people are shown mainly to move or reassure a non-disabled audience, and it applies whenever a disabled model's presence is treated as remarkable rather than routine.
- 4
Describe how the campaign represents body shape.
Model answer
Bodies outside the standard sample size are shown in the same clothing, lighting and poses as any other model, which presents them as unremarkable rather than as a special category.
- 5
Why does representing race through casting alone attract criticism?
Model answer
Because visible variety in front of the camera can coexist with an entirely unchanged industry behind it, so the representation changes while the power to make representations does not.
- 6
Define the term tokenism.
Model answer
Tokenism is the inclusion of a small number of people from under-represented groups as a gesture, without changing how those groups are treated or represented more widely.
