Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    What is meant by under-representation?

    Model answer

Under-representation is a group appearing far less often than its place in society would suggest, or appearing only within a narrow range of contexts.

  2. 2

    What is meant by misrepresentation?

    Model answer

Misrepresentation is a group appearing regularly but being consistently associated with a narrow, distorted or false set of characteristics.

  3. 3

Why is under-representation a problem even when the few representations that exist are favourable?

    Model answer

A small number of appearances cannot show the variety within a group, so a single figure is left to stand for everyone and the group's ordinary diversity stays invisible.

  4. 4

Give two reasons a social group may be under-represented in mainstream media.

    Model answer

Producers may be targeting an audience they assume the group is not part of, and few members of the group may hold the commissioning and writing roles where decisions are made.

  5. 5

    Define the term tokenism.

    Model answer

Tokenism is including a single member of an under-represented group so that a text appears inclusive, without giving that character depth or a real part in the story.

  6. 6

Explain how casting a group only in supporting roles can amount to misrepresentation.

    Model answer

It implies that the group exists to serve other people's stories rather than to have narratives of its own.
