Chemical Equilibrium
- 4 subtopics
- 8 things to know

What Chemical Equilibrium covers
Dynamic equilibrium and how it responds to a change: le Chatelier's principle, the compromise conditions industry actually uses, and the equilibrium constant Kc as a measure of how far a reaction goes.
Where it is assessed

What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Which way does an equilibrium shift when the temperature is raised, when the temperature of an exothermic reaction is lowered, and when the pressure is increased?
What does lowering the pressure do to a gaseous equilibrium, what does changing the pressure do to H₂(g) + I₂(g) ⇌ 2HI(g), and how does a catalyst affect the forward and reverse rates?
What does a catalyst do to the time taken to reach equilibrium, and how can the effects of concentration and of temperature on equilibrium position be investigated?
How does equilibrium yield influence the choice of industrial conditions?
What is the role of the iron catalyst in the Haber process?
How are the concentrations of each species treated in the Kc expression with respect to the balanced equation?
What can you deduce about the composition of an equilibrium mixture when Kc is approximately equal to 1?

Dynamic equilibrium vs Static equilibrium
Dynamic equilibrium: forward and reverse reactions continuing at equal rates in a closed system. Static equilibrium: a state with no continuing opposing reactions.
Equilibrium position vs Equilibrium constant
Equilibrium position: relative amounts of reactants and products at equilibrium. Equilibrium constant: a value calculated from equilibrium concentrations at a stated temperature.
Closed system vs Open system
Closed system: matter cannot enter or leave the reaction vessel. Open system: matter can enter or leave the reaction vessel.
Questions from this topic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What two conditions must be met for a dynamic equilibrium to exist?
Model answer
The system must be closed, and the rate of the forward reaction must equal the rate of the reverse reaction.
- 2
At dynamic equilibrium, what happens to the concentrations of reactants and products over time?
Model answer
They remain constant over time.
- 3
Explain why the concentrations at dynamic equilibrium remain constant even though reactions are still occurring.
Model answer
The forward and reverse reactions occur at equal rates, so reactants are converted to products at the same rate as products are converted back to reactants.
- 4
Why must a system be closed for dynamic equilibrium to be established?
Model answer
No substances can enter or leave a closed system, so the reactants and products remain within the system to maintain equilibrium.
- 5
Does a reaction stop occurring once dynamic equilibrium is reached?
Model answer
No, both the forward and reverse reactions continue to occur simultaneously at equal rates.
- 6
State Le Chatelier's principle.
Model answer
When a system at equilibrium is subjected to a change, the position of equilibrium shifts to counteract that change.
