Enthalpy Changes
Working through an enthalpy cycle and the sign conventions
- 2 things to know
- Components 01 and 03
Overview
Recall questions on reversing a reaction's sign, treating stoichiometric coefficients, and the order of steps in solving an unfamiliar cycle.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
How is an unknown enthalpy change found from an alternative route, how can enthalpy changes be determined directly, and what equation gives the heat transferred?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Explain why the formula ΔᵣH = Σ ΔfH(products) − Σ ΔfH(reactants) is an application of Hess's law.
Model answer
Hess's law states that enthalpy change is independent of the route taken. The formula uses an indirect route via elements in their standard states: decomposing reactants to elements (−Σ ΔfH reactants) then forming products from elements (+Σ ΔfH products), giving the same overall enthalpy change as the direct reaction.
- 2
When using the formation enthalpy formula to calculate ΔᵣH, what must be done if a substance appears with a stoichiometric coefficient greater than one?
Model answer
The standard enthalpy of formation of that substance must be multiplied by its stoichiometric coefficient before summing.
- 3
What is the enthalpy of formation of oxygen gas, O₂?
Model answer
Zero, because the enthalpy of formation of any element in its standard state is zero by definition.
- 4
Why is the standard enthalpy of formation of graphite equal to zero?
Model answer
Because graphite is the standard state of carbon, and the enthalpy of formation of an element in its standard state is zero by definition.
- 5
How must stoichiometric coefficients be treated when using enthalpy values in an enthalpy cycle?
Model answer
They must be used as multipliers for the enthalpy values.
- 6
Explain why the sum of combustion enthalpies of products is subtracted rather than added when using combustion data.
Model answer
Because the arrows from products to combustion products must be reversed to complete the cycle, so their enthalpy changes are subtracted.
