Sampling and data collection
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 2
Overview
Random sampling, systematic sampling and stratified sampling.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Define sampling.
Describe random sampling.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define sampling.
Model answer
Sampling is selecting a subset of a population to measure, because measuring every member would be impossible or impractical.
- 2
Describe random sampling.
Model answer
Every member of the population has an equal chance of selection, usually chosen using random numbers.
- 3
Give one strength and one weakness of random sampling.
Model answer
It avoids investigator bias, but it can by chance miss part of the area or leave gaps in coverage.
- 4
Describe systematic sampling.
Model answer
Sites or individuals are selected at regular intervals, such as every ten metres along a transect or every fifth house.
- 5
Give one strength and one weakness of systematic sampling.
Model answer
It guarantees even coverage and is simple to carry out, but it can coincide with a regular pattern in the landscape and so miss variation.
- 6
Describe stratified sampling.
Model answer
The population is divided into groups and a number is sampled from each in proportion to its size.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Fieldwork and Geographical Skills, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
