Glaciated Landscapes
Suites of landforms in glacial landscapes
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 1
Overview
Suite of landforms, why erosion dominates in highlands and deposition in lowlands and knock and lochan landscape.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Which depositional landforms characterise a lowland glaciated landscape?
Describe how the landscape produced by an ice sheet differs from that produced by valley glaciers.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is meant by a suite of landforms?
Model answer
A suite is a group of landforms that occur together because they were produced by the same set of processes acting on the same landscape.
- 2
Which erosional landforms characterise a highland glaciated landscape?
Model answer
Cirques, arêtes, pyramidal peaks, glacial troughs with truncated spurs, hanging valleys and ribbon lakes.
- 3
Which depositional landforms characterise a lowland glaciated landscape?
Model answer
Drumlin swarms, extensive till sheets, terminal and recessional moraines, eskers and outwash plains.
- 4
Explain why erosion dominates in highlands and deposition in lowlands.
Model answer
Ice is confined, thick and fast-moving in mountain valleys so it erodes, and it thins, slows and melts as it spreads onto lowlands so it deposits.
- 5
Describe how the landscape produced by an ice sheet differs from that produced by valley glaciers.
Model answer
An ice sheet buries the relief and scours it into a smoothed, streamlined surface over a wide area, while valley glaciers deepen individual valleys and sharpen the ridges between them.
- 6
Why does an ice sheet leave sharp peaks in some places and not others?
Model answer
Peaks that projected through the ice as nunataks were shaped by frost action and stayed jagged, while those overridden by the ice were smoothed.
