Hazards of low and high pressure systems
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 4
Overview
How a mid-latitude depression forms, weather sequence as a depression passes and two hazards associated with a deep depression in the UK.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is the eye of a tropical cyclone?
Describe the weather sequence as a depression passes.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Describe how a mid-latitude depression forms.
Model answer
Warm tropical air meets cold polar air at the polar front, the warm air is forced to rise over the cold, pressure falls at the surface and a rotating low develops.
- 2
Describe the weather sequence as a depression passes.
Model answer
Cloud thickens and rain begins at the warm front, milder drizzly conditions follow in the warm sector, then heavy showers and a temperature drop as the cold front passes, with clearing skies behind.
- 3
Name two hazards associated with a deep depression in the UK.
Model answer
Damaging gale-force winds, and prolonged heavy rain leading to river flooding.
- 4
What is a storm surge, and how does a depression cause one?
Model answer
A storm surge is an abnormal rise in sea level, caused by low pressure allowing the sea to bulge upward and by strong winds driving water towards the coast.
- 5
Describe the formation of a tropical cyclone.
Model answer
Sea surface temperatures above about 27°C supply heat and moisture, air rises and condenses releasing latent heat, and the Coriolis effect sets the system rotating.
- 6
Why do tropical cyclones not form on the equator?
Model answer
The Coriolis effect is zero there, so the rising air cannot be set rotating.
