Macro-scale erosional landforms
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 1
Overview
Shape of a cirque, how a cirque forms and formation of a pyramidal peak.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is a roche moutonnée, and which side is which?
Describe the shape of a cirque.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Describe the shape of a cirque.
Model answer
A cirque is an armchair-shaped hollow high on a mountainside, with a steep back wall, an over-deepened rock basin and often a raised lip at its outer edge.
- 2
Explain how a cirque forms.
Model answer
Snow collects in a hollow and compacts to ice, freeze-thaw steepens the back wall, rotational movement of the ice abrades and over-deepens the floor, and reduced pressure at the outer edge leaves a lip.
- 3
What is a tarn?
Model answer
A tarn is a small lake occupying the over-deepened basin of a cirque after the ice has gone.
- 4
Why does a cirque have a raised lip?
Model answer
Ice pressure and velocity fall at the outer edge of the rotating mass, so erosion there is weaker than in the centre of the basin.
- 5
What is an arête, and how does it form?
Model answer
An arête is a narrow, knife-edged ridge formed where two cirques erode back towards each other from opposite sides of the same ridge.
- 6
Describe the formation of a pyramidal peak.
Model answer
Three or more cirques erode back into the same mountain from different directions, and the ridges between them meet at a sharpened summit.
