Water and Carbon Cycles
Rising atmospheric carbon and its impacts
- 2 things to know
- A2 Unit 3
Overview
How carbon dioxide alters the Earth's energy budget, radiative forcing and how warming intensifies the water cycle.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
State the two main causes of the recent rise in atmospheric carbon dioxide.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
State the two main causes of the recent rise in atmospheric carbon dioxide.
Model answer
The combustion of fossil fuels, and changes in land use, above all deforestation.
- 2
Give the concentration of atmospheric carbon dioxide before industrialisation and today.
Model answer
About 280 parts per million before industrialisation, and more than 420 parts per million today.
- 3
Explain how carbon dioxide alters the Earth's energy budget.
Model answer
It lets incoming short-wave solar radiation pass through but absorbs outgoing long-wave radiation from the surface and re-radiates part of it downwards, so less heat escapes to space and the lower atmosphere warms.
- 4
What is meant by radiative forcing?
Model answer
Radiative forcing is the change in the balance between incoming and outgoing radiation caused by a factor such as rising greenhouse gases, measured in watts per square metre.
- 5
Why does a warmer atmosphere hold more water vapour?
Model answer
The amount of vapour air can hold before saturating rises with temperature, so warmer air carries more moisture.
- 6
Explain how warming intensifies the water cycle.
Model answer
Higher temperatures raise evaporation and allow the air to carry more moisture, so evaporation and precipitation both increase and water is moved through the cycle faster.
