Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

What is meant by proportionality in an electoral system?

    Model answer

Proportionality is the closeness of the match between the share of votes each party receives and the share of seats it is awarded.

  2. 2

Explain why fairness in an electoral system is contested rather than settled.

    Model answer

Some define fairness as seats matching votes, others as every area having its own member or as voters being able to remove a government directly, and no system maximises all three.

  3. 3

    Define a two-party system.

    Model answer

A two-party system is one in which two parties dominate the vote and only they realistically alternate in government.

  4. 4

    Define a multi-party system.

    Model answer

A multi-party system is one in which several parties win significant representation and government usually requires more than one of them.

  5. 5

    Define a dominant-party system.

    Model answer

A dominant-party system is one in which several parties compete freely but one wins repeatedly over a long period.

  6. 6

Which type of party system has characterised elections to the Senedd, and why?

    Model answer

A multi-party system, because the list element gives smaller parties seats; Labour topped the poll at every devolved Welsh election until 2026, when Plaid Cymru became the largest party, Reform UK came second and Labour fell to third.
