Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
State four things party members do for their party.
Model answer
They pay subscriptions, campaign and canvass locally, select candidates, and take part in policy debate and leadership elections.
- 2
Why is a large membership valuable to a party beyond the money it raises?
Model answer
Members provide unpaid campaign labour, local knowledge and a visible presence in communities that paid advertising cannot replace.
- 3
Describe the change in the two largest parties' membership since the 1950s.
Model answer
Conservative membership fell from around 2.8 million in the early 1950s and Labour's from around a million, to a few hundred thousand between them by the 2010s.
- 4
Give two explanations for the long decline in party membership.
Model answer
Weaker class and community attachments removed the social routes into party life, and single-issue campaigns offer participation without the commitment of joining a party.
- 5
Which party's membership rose sharply after 2015, and why is that significant?
Model answer
Labour's rose to over half a million, showing that the decline in membership is reversible when a contest engages people.
- 6
What is a constituency party or local association?
Model answer
It is the party's local unit, which recruits members, runs campaigns in the area and selects the party's candidate for that seat.
