- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 2
Overview
How the supplementary vote works and how the alternative vote works.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Which elections in England and Wales used the supplementary vote?
Which Act replaced the supplementary vote at mayoral and Police and Crime Commissioner elections, and with what?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Describe how the supplementary vote works.
Model answer
Voters mark a first and a second choice; if no candidate has a majority, all but the top two are eliminated and second choices for those two are added on.
- 2
Which elections in England and Wales used the supplementary vote?
Model answer
Elections for directly elected mayors and for Police and Crime Commissioners used it.
- 3
Which Act replaced the supplementary vote at those elections, and with what?
Model answer
The Elections Act 2022 replaced it with First Past the Post from 2023, but the English Devolution and Community Empowerment Act 2026 brought the supplementary vote back for later elections.
- 4
Give one advantage of the supplementary vote.
Model answer
The winner usually has the support of a majority of those whose ballots remain in the count, which strengthens the mandate of a single officeholder.
- 5
Give one disadvantage of the supplementary vote.
Model answer
A voter whose two choices are both eliminated has no further say, so the eventual winner may still lack majority support across all ballots cast.
- 6
Describe how the alternative vote works.
Model answer
Voters rank candidates in a single-member constituency, and the lowest candidate is eliminated and their votes redistributed until someone has more than half.
