- 1
What was the aim of Bandura, Ross and Ross (1961)?
Model answer
Bandura and colleagues aimed to find out whether children would imitate aggression they had seen an adult model perform. The study also tested whether children copy same-sex models more.
- 2
Who took part in Bandura, Ross and Ross (1961), and how were they grouped?
Model answer
The participants were 72 children from the Stanford University nursery school, 36 boys and 36 girls, aged about three to six. The children were matched on existing aggression and split into aggressive-model, non-aggressive-model and control groups.
- 3
What did the aggressive model do in Bandura, Ross and Ross (1961)?
Model answer
The aggressive model attacked a five-foot inflatable Bobo doll with a mallet and fists for about ten minutes. The model also shouted aggressive phrases such as ‘Sock him in the nose’.
- 4
What did the non-aggressive model do in Bandura, Ross and Ross (1961)?
Model answer
The non-aggressive model played quietly with construction toys and ignored the Bobo doll. The control group saw no model at all.
- 5
How were the children tested after watching the model in Bandura, Ross and Ross (1961)?
Model answer
Each child was mildly frustrated by being shown attractive toys and then told they were for other children. The child was then observed through a one-way mirror for 20 minutes in a room with a smaller Bobo doll.
- 6
What did Bandura, Ross and Ross (1961) find?
Model answer
Children who saw the aggressive model copied many of its physical and verbal attacks. Children in the non-aggressive and control groups showed little imitative aggression.
