- 3 things to know
- Paper 2
Overview

What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What did Hudson (1960) find about culture and depth in pictures?
What is perceptual set?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is perceptual set?
Model answer
Perceptual set is a readiness to perceive certain features of a stimulus and ignore others. Past experience and the current situation shape what a person expects to see.
- 2
How does perceptual set support Gregory's constructivist theory?
Model answer
Perceptual set shows that perception is influenced by expectations and knowledge, not just sensory input. The effect fits the top-down view of perception.
- 3
How can motivation affect perceptual set?
Model answer
A strong need or desire makes people more likely to notice things linked to it. A hungry person is quicker to notice food.
- 4
What did Gilchrist and Nesberg (1952) find about motivation and perception?
Model answer
Participants who had gone without food rated pictures of food as brighter than participants who had eaten. Hunger made food-related stimuli stand out more.
- 5
How can expectation affect perceptual set?
Model answer
People tend to see what the context leads them to expect. An ambiguous stimulus is interpreted to fit the surrounding information.
- 6
Describe Bruner and Minturn's (1955) study of expectation.
Model answer
Participants were shown an ambiguous figure that could be read as the letter B or the number 13. Participants shown it among letters reported a B. Participants shown it among numbers reported 13.
