Planes and axes of movement
- 3 things to know
- J587/01
Overview
The sagittal, frontal and transverse planes, the frontal, transverse and longitudinal axes, and the planes and axes of somersaults, cartwheels, spins, kicks and golf swings.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Where are the frontal and transverse planes, and which movements happen in each?
What is a plane of movement?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a plane of movement?
Model answer
A plane of movement is an imaginary flat surface running through the body. Movement takes place along a plane.
- 2
What is an axis of rotation?
Model answer
An axis of rotation is an imaginary line through the body about which the body or a limb turns. An axis always runs at right angles to its matching plane.
- 3
Where is the sagittal plane, and which movements happen in it?
Model answer
The sagittal plane runs vertically from front to back, dividing the body into left and right halves. Flexion and extension happen in the sagittal plane.
- 4
Where is the frontal plane, and which movements happen in it?
Model answer
The frontal plane runs vertically from side to side, dividing the body into front and back halves. Abduction and adduction happen in the frontal plane.
- 5
Where is the transverse plane, and which movement happens in it?
Model answer
The transverse plane runs horizontally, dividing the body into upper and lower halves. Rotation happens in the transverse plane.
- 6
Where is the frontal axis?
Model answer
The frontal axis runs horizontally from the front to the back of the body. Movements in the frontal plane, such as a cartwheel, turn about the frontal axis.

Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Movement Analysis, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
