How is qualitative data collected in physical education?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is quantitative data in physical education?
Model answer
Quantitative data is information in the form of numbers that can be measured or counted. A time of 4.8 seconds in the 30 m sprint test is quantitative data.
- 2
What is qualitative data in physical education?
Model answer
Qualitative data describes qualities, opinions or feelings in words rather than numbers. A coach's written comments on a player's passing technique are qualitative data.
- 3
How is quantitative data collected in physical education?
Model answer
Quantitative data is collected by measuring or counting, for example with fitness tests, stopwatches, heart rate monitors and match statistics. Closed questions in a questionnaire, such as how many hours of exercise a person does each week, also give numbers.
- 4
How is qualitative data collected in physical education?
Model answer
Qualitative data is collected through interviews, observations and open questions in a questionnaire. A coach might ask a performer to describe how confident they felt during a match.
- 5
Give one strength and one weakness of quantitative data.
Model answer
Quantitative data is easy to compare and to present in graphs and tables. Quantitative data does not explain why a result happened, such as why a player's bleep test score fell.
- 6
Give one strength and one weakness of qualitative data.
Model answer
Qualitative data gives detail about people's reasons, opinions and feelings. Qualitative data is based on personal views, so it is harder to analyse and compare than numbers.
