How does goal setting motivate performers?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is goal setting?
Model answer
Goal setting is deciding on targets that a performer aims to reach. Clear goals give training a purpose and a direction.
- 2
How does goal setting help exercise and training adherence?
Model answer
Adherence means sticking to an exercise or training programme. Goals give a performer a reason to keep going, so they are less likely to give up.
- 3
How does goal setting motivate performers?
Model answer
A performer who reaches a goal feels a sense of achievement that encourages further effort. A new goal then gives the performer something else to work towards.
- 4
How does goal setting improve or optimise performance?
Model answer
Goals focus training on what the performer needs to improve. Progress towards each goal can be measured and the training adjusted.
- 5
What does SMART stand for in OCR's principle of goal setting?
Model answer
SMART stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Recorded and Timed. Each principle makes a goal more effective.
- 6
Why should a goal be specific?
Model answer
A specific goal says exactly what is to be improved. A goal to improve a first serve percentage is clearer than one to play better tennis.
