Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

What is the difference between a hazard and a risk?

    Model answer

A hazard is anything with the potential to cause harm. A risk is the chance that the hazard will actually cause harm.

  2. 2

How does personal protective equipment reduce the risk of injury?

    Model answer

Protective equipment absorbs or spreads the force of an impact on a vulnerable part of the body. Shin pads, for example, protect a hockey player's lower legs.

  3. 3

Why does a rugby player wear a gum shield?

    Model answer

A gum shield protects the teeth and gums from impacts in the tackle and scrum.

  4. 4

How can correct footwear prevent injury?

    Model answer

Correct footwear gives grip, support and cushioning suited to the surface. A footballer wears studded boots on grass to avoid slipping.

  5. 5

Why must jewellery be removed before most sports?

    Model answer

Rings, earrings and necklaces can catch on equipment or clothing and tear the skin. Jewellery can also cut or scratch an opponent during contact.

  6. 6

Why is suitable clothing important when training outdoors in cold weather?

    Model answer

Warm layers keep the muscles warm and supple. Cold, stiff muscles are more easily strained or torn.
