- 3 things to know
- Papers 2 and 3
Overview
Recall questions on typical and atypical antipsychotics, CBT for psychosis and family therapy for schizophrenia, SSRIs and CBT for depression, SSRIs and exposure and response prevention for OCD, and olanzapine, family-based therapy and CBT-E for anorexia, with the trial evidence for each.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What are typical biological and psychological treatments for anorexia nervosa?
What are the main side effects of typical antipsychotics?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is the main biological treatment for schizophrenia?
Model answer
Antipsychotic drugs, which reduce symptoms by lowering dopamine activity in the brain.
- 2
What are typical (first-generation) antipsychotics and how do they work?
Model answer
Drugs such as chlorpromazine and haloperidol that act as dopamine antagonists, blocking D2 receptors in the mesolimbic pathway to reduce positive symptoms such as hallucinations and delusions.
- 3
What are atypical (second-generation) antipsychotics and how do they differ from typical ones?
Model answer
Drugs such as clozapine, risperidone and olanzapine that block D2 receptors but bind more temporarily and also act on serotonin receptors, often easing negative symptoms and causing fewer movement side effects.
- 4
What are the main side effects of typical antipsychotics?
Model answer
Extrapyramidal effects such as tremors and stiffness, Parkinsonian symptoms, and, with long-term use, tardive dyskinesia (involuntary movements of the face and mouth).
- 5
Why do patients taking clozapine require regular blood tests?
Model answer
Clozapine can cause agranulocytosis, a dangerous drop in white blood cells, so blood must be monitored to catch this early.
- 6
What is the psychological treatment for schizophrenia known as CBTp?
Model answer
Cognitive behavioural therapy for psychosis, which helps patients identify, challenge and reality-test the distorted beliefs behind their delusions and hallucinations, reducing distress and improving coping.
