  • 3 things to know
  • Papers 1 and 3

Overview

Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

Why might contradictory findings from earlier studies lead a researcher to formulate a two-tailed hypothesis?

    Model answer

Because the inconsistent results make it impossible to confidently predict which direction the effect will occur, so the hypothesis must remain open to either outcome.

  2. 2

    What is an alternate hypothesis?

    Model answer

A testable statement predicting a relationship or difference between variables; also called an experimental or research hypothesis.

  3. 3

    What is a null hypothesis?

    Model answer

A statement that no difference or relationship will be found beyond what chance would produce.

  4. 4

Why is it the null hypothesis that is formally tested?

    Model answer

Because a statistical test estimates the probability of the result if the null were true, and the null is rejected only when that probability is small enough.

  5. 5

What is a directional alternate hypothesis?

    Model answer

One that predicts the direction of the difference, such as that recall will be higher in the quiet condition.

  6. 6

What is a non-directional alternate hypothesis?

    Model answer

One predicting a difference without saying which way it will go.
