Ethical issues in a research design
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 4
Overview
Recall questions on obtaining consent, the right to withdraw, protecting identities in publication, covert methods, disclosure of risk to a child, debriefing, and the researcher's own safety.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What must a participant be told before informed consent can be given?
Whose consent is needed when the participants are children?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What must a participant be told before informed consent can be given?
Model answer
They must be told what taking part involves, what the research is for, who will see the data, how it will be stored, and that they may stop at any time.
- 2
Why can informed consent be difficult in observational research?
Model answer
In a public or continuing setting the researcher cannot obtain agreement from everyone present, and telling everyone would change the behaviour being studied.
- 3
Whose consent is needed when the participants are children?
Model answer
A parent or guardian must consent and the school or other gatekeeper must agree, while the child's own willingness should still be sought and respected.
- 4
What does the right to withdraw entitle a participant to do?
Model answer
It entitles them to stop taking part at any point and to have their contribution removed from the study, without giving any reason for it.
- 5
Distinguish confidentiality from anonymity.
Model answer
Confidentiality means the researcher knows who said what but does not disclose it, while anonymity means identities are never recorded at all.
- 6
How can a design protect participants' identities when the findings are published?
Model answer
Names can be replaced with pseudonyms, places disguised, and any detail that would identify an individual removed or grouped with others.
