Justifying the chosen method
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 4
Overview
Recall questions on the grounds a choice of method rests on, matching design to theory and to the group studied, triangulation, case studies, and accounting for the methods rejected.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why is a secondary source sometimes the better choice in a design?
Why does a mixed design need each method justified separately?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What does it mean to justify a chosen method?
Model answer
It means explaining why that method will answer this particular research question better than the alternatives, given the topic, the group and the resources.
- 2
Which considerations should a justification of method cover?
Model answer
It should cover theoretical fit, practical feasibility, ethical acceptability, and the validity, reliability and representativeness the method can deliver.
- 3
Why would a positivist design favour a large structured survey?
Model answer
It produces standardised quantitative data from many people, which can be compared, replicated and used to test a hypothesis.
- 4
Why would an interpretivist design favour unstructured interviews?
Model answer
They let participants answer on their own terms and in their own words, which gives access to the meanings behind their behaviour.
- 5
Justify the choice of participant observation for a study of a youth group.
Model answer
It allows the researcher to see behaviour as it happens in its natural setting, which reveals what members actually do rather than what they say they do.
- 6
Justify a self-completion questionnaire for research on a sensitive subject.
Model answer
Answering privately with no interviewer present reduces embarrassment, so respondents are more willing to report behaviour they would not admit face to face.
