Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define labelling as it is used in the sociology of education.
Model answer
Labelling is the process by which teachers attach a meaning to a pupil, such as bright or troublemaker, which then guides how that pupil is treated.
- 2
What did Becker find about how teachers judge pupils?
Model answer
Becker found that teachers measured pupils against an image of the ideal pupil, judging them on appearance, conduct and work rather than on ability alone.
- 3
Explain the self-fulfilling prophecy.
Model answer
A prediction about a pupil changes how they are treated, the pupil comes to accept it, and their behaviour then makes the original prediction come true.
- 4
What did Rosenthal and Jacobson do in their classroom experiment?
Model answer
They told teachers that randomly chosen pupils were likely to make rapid progress, and those pupils went on to make greater gains than their classmates.
- 5
Give one criticism of Rosenthal and Jacobson's study.
Model answer
Deceiving teachers raises clear ethical problems, and later attempts to repeat the study produced weaker and less consistent effects.
- 6
What is streaming?
Model answer
Streaming places pupils in a single ranked class for all their subjects on the basis of one general judgement of ability.
