- 1
What is meant by nonconformity in Welsh religious history?
Model answer
Nonconformity refers to the Protestant denominations outside the established Church, chiefly Methodists, Baptists and Independents, which became the dominant religious form in Wales.
- 2
Why did nonconformity become so strongly identified with Welsh national identity?

Chapels preached, sang and taught in Welsh while the established Church was associated with English landlords and gentry, so chapel and nation became linked.

Model answer
It closed public houses in Wales on Sundays from 1881, and local polls on Sunday opening continued into the late twentieth century.
