- 1
Define high culture.

High culture refers to the cultural products treated as the finest a society produces, such as opera, classical music, fine art and canonical literature, and traditionally associated with elite groups.
- 2
Define popular culture.
Model answer
Popular culture is the culture of the majority: television, chart music, sport, film and social media, produced commercially and consumed by very large numbers of people.
- 3

Mass culture is standardised culture made for a mass audience; Adorno and Horkheimer of the Frankfurt School attacked it as a culture industry producing passive and uncritical consumers.

Postmodernists such as Strinati argue the boundary has collapsed, since classical music is used to sell cars and popular film and television are studied as seriously as art.

What is folk culture?
Model answer
Folk culture is the culture of a local community, made by its own members and passed on informally, such as traditional songs, dances, crafts and stories rather than commercial products.
