New workers learn the formal rules through induction and training and the informal ones, such as the pace of work, the humour and how to speak to managers, from the colleagues around them.
- 2
What is occupational socialisation?
Model answer
Occupational socialisation is the process of learning the knowledge, values and identity of a job, so that a person comes to think and behave as a member of that occupation.

Canteen culture is the informal set of attitudes, jokes and stories shared among officers away from supervision, which Waddington argued teaches recruits how the job is really done.
- 4

Long training, codes of conduct, mentoring and professional bodies instil a shared identity and standards of behaviour that members are expected to uphold throughout their careers.

What is a total institution?
Model answer
Goffman used total institution for a place where people live and work under a single authority, cut off from wider society, such as a prison, a psychiatric hospital, a barracks or a boarding school.
- 6
Describe what Goffman called the mortification of the self.
Model answer
On entry to a total institution the inmate's former identity is stripped away by the removal of possessions, personal clothing and sometimes their name, so that an institutional self can be imposed.
