Who is interviewed for the Crime Survey for England and Wales?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a victim survey?
Model answer
A victim survey asks a sample of the population whether they have experienced crime over a set period, whether or not they reported it at the time.
- 2
When did the British Crime Survey begin, and what is it called now?
Model answer
It began in 1982 and was renamed the Crime Survey for England and Wales in 2012.
- 3
Who is interviewed for the Crime Survey for England and Wales?
Model answer
Adults in a large random sample of households are asked about their experience of crime in the previous twelve months, and children aged ten to fifteen are covered by a separate survey.
- 4
Give two crimes that the main victim survey cannot measure.
Model answer
It cannot measure homicide, because the victim cannot be interviewed, and it excludes offences committed against businesses.
- 5
Why can a victim survey not capture victimless crime?
Model answer
Where the participants consent and nobody considers themselves harmed, there is no victim available to report the offence.
- 6
Give two strengths of victim surveys.
Model answer
They reach offences that were never reported to the police, and their method stays constant, so trends are not distorted by changes in police recording.
