- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 2 and A2 Unit 4
Overview
Non-participant observation, structured observation and observation schedule.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is structured observation?
What is an observation schedule?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is non-participant observation?
Model answer
Observation in which the researcher watches the group without joining in its activities.
- 2
What is structured observation?
Model answer
Observation in which behaviour is recorded against a pre-set schedule of defined categories.
- 3
What is an observation schedule?
Model answer
A prepared list of behaviour categories the observer records each time they occur.
- 4
Explain why structured observation produces quantitative data.
Model answer
Each occurrence of a defined behaviour is counted, so the record is a set of frequencies that can be compared and analysed statistically.
- 5
Give one advantage of non-participant observation over participant observation.
Model answer
The researcher stays detached, so there is less risk of going native and influencing the group.
- 6
Give one disadvantage of non-participant observation.
Model answer
Without taking part, the researcher cannot ask about or share in the meanings behind what they see.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Research Methods: Primary and Secondary, on a schedule.
