Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is an anti-school subculture?
Model answer
An anti-school subculture is a peer group that rejects the values of the school and awards status for breaking its rules.
- 2
What did Hargreaves (1967) find about streaming and pupil subcultures?
Model answer
Hargreaves found that boys placed in low streams were labelled as failures and formed a delinquent subculture in which defying the school earned respect.
- 3
How does streaming split a year group into opposed pupil cultures?
Model answer
Ranking pupils by perceived ability separates them, and those placed in the lower groups respond by forming a culture whose values invert the school's.
- 4
What did Ball's study of a comprehensive school add to this account?
Model answer
Ball found that abolishing banding weakened the anti-school subculture, although teachers went on expecting more of pupils from higher social classes.
- 5
Why does labelling in school matter for youth culture outside it?
Model answer
A pupil written off as a failure looks elsewhere for status, and the peer group that supplies it usually carries over into leisure and sometimes into offending.
- 6
How does a self-fulfilling prophecy operate on a pupil labelled as a troublemaker?
Model answer
Teachers expect trouble and treat the pupil accordingly, the pupil accepts that view of themselves, and their behaviour comes to match the label that was applied.
