Introducing the Market
Equilibrium price and quantity
- 3 things to know
- Papers 1 and 3
Overview
Market equilibrium and the market-clearing price, calculating shortages and surpluses, equilibrium as a position of rest, how shifts in demand and supply move price and quantity, the quantity traded, consumer and producer surplus, and why equilibrium can leave consumers unable to buy.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why is equilibrium described as a position of rest?
What happens to equilibrium price and quantity if supply rises while demand is unchanged?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define market equilibrium.
Model answer
Market equilibrium is the price at which the quantity demanded equals the quantity supplied, so there is no tendency for the price to change.
- 2
Where is equilibrium found on a supply and demand diagram?
Model answer
It is at the point where the demand curve and the supply curve intersect.
- 3
What is meant by the market-clearing price?
Model answer
The market-clearing price is the price at which everything offered for sale is bought, leaving neither a surplus nor a shortage.
- 4
At £5 a unit demand is 800 and supply is 500. State the size and type of the disequilibrium.
Model answer
There is excess demand of 300 units, because buyers want more than producers will supply at that price.
- 5
At £8 a unit supply is 900 and demand is 600. Calculate the surplus.
Model answer
There is a surplus of 300 units.
- 6
Why is equilibrium described as a position of rest?
Model answer
At that price the plans of buyers and sellers match, so neither side has any reason to change its behaviour.
