Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
How does the financial sector make the exchange of goods and services possible?
Model answer
It supplies money and the payment systems that go with it, including accounts, cards, transfers and clearing, so that value can be transferred safely between parties who need not meet or trust one another.
- 2
Why would trade be very limited without a payments system?
Model answer
Barter requires a double coincidence of wants, and without a trusted way of transferring value at a distance buyers and sellers in different places could not deal at all, so markets would stay small and local.
- 3
What is a clearing system?
Model answer
A clearing system is the mechanism by which banks net off the payments owed between them and settle the balances, so that funds move reliably from the payer's account to the payee's.
- 4
How does trade credit help business-to-business exchange?
Model answer
The supplier delivers goods now and is paid perhaps thirty or sixty days later, so the buyer can sell the goods before paying for them; in effect the supplier provides a short-term interest-free loan.
- 5
What is a letter of credit, and why does an exporter want one?
Model answer
A letter of credit is a bank's undertaking to pay the exporter once the agreed shipping documents are presented, so the exporter is relying on the creditworthiness of a bank rather than on an unknown foreign buyer.
- 6
Define an equity.
Model answer
An equity is a share representing part-ownership of a company, giving the holder a claim on a share of its profits through dividends and normally a vote at its meetings.
