Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

What is liberalism as a theory of international relations?

    Model answer

The view that cooperation between states is both possible and expanding, because human beings are capable of reason and moral progress, and because trade, law and international institutions give states a shared interest in order.

  2. 2

How does the liberal view of human nature differ from the realist one?

    Model answer

Liberals hold that people are rational and capable of moral improvement, so conflict reflects bad institutions and misunderstanding rather than an unalterable drive for power. Realists treat self-interest as fixed.

  3. 3

What do liberals mean by the possibility of harmony?

    Model answer

That states' interests are not fundamentally opposed. Where realists see gains for one as losses for another, liberals argue that trade, security and environmental cooperation can leave every participant better off.

  4. 4

    What is complex interdependence?

    Model answer

A condition in which states are linked by so many channels — trade, finance, investment, migration, communication — that their prosperity depends on one another, military force loses its usefulness, and no single issue dominates the agenda.

  5. 5

Who developed the concept of complex interdependence?

    Model answer

Robert Keohane and Joseph Nye, who argued that the realist picture of states as billiard balls pursuing security through force no longer described relations among advanced economies.

  6. 6

Why do liberals argue that interdependence discourages war?

    Model answer

Because attacking a trading partner destroys markets, supply chains and investment that the aggressor itself depends on, so the economic cost of conflict rises until it outweighs any plausible gain.
