What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why is state power hard to measure?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a great power?
Model answer
A state with sufficient military and economic weight, and sufficient diplomatic reach, that its interests must be taken into account in any major international question, even if its influence is not global.
- 2
What is a superpower?
Model answer
A state whose military, economic and cultural reach extends across the whole globe, allowing it to project decisive force in any region and to shape the international order itself.
- 3
Why is the USA generally classified as a superpower?
Model answer
It combines by far the largest defence budget with a worldwide network of bases and alliances, the largest single national economy, control of the world's principal reserve currency, and cultural reach through its media, universities and technology.
- 4
What arguments are made that US superpower status is in relative decline?
Model answer
Its share of world output has fallen as others have grown, prolonged interventions in Afghanistan and Iraq showed the limits of military supremacy, and China now rivals it in economic and technological weight.
- 5
What is an emerging power?
Model answer
A state whose economic growth, population or regional weight is converting it into a significant international actor, but which does not yet have the global reach of an established great power.
- 6
Which countries make up BRICS, and what does the grouping represent?
Model answer
Originally Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa; since 2024 it has expanded to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, the United Arab Emirates and Indonesia. It represents an attempt by large developing economies to coordinate positions and press for a greater voice in global institutions.
