Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What are the defining features of a democratic state?
Model answer
Free and competitive elections at regular intervals, protection of civil liberties, the rule of law applied to rulers as well as citizens, and an independent judiciary and media able to hold government to account.
- 2
What is a semi-democratic state?
Model answer
One that holds elections and maintains democratic forms, but where the contest is not genuinely fair — because opposition parties are obstructed, the media is controlled, or the courts are not independent.
- 3
What is an autocratic state?
Model answer
One in which power is concentrated in a single ruler or a narrow group, exercised without meaningful electoral accountability and without effective legal or institutional restraint.
- 4
What is a failed state?
Model answer
A state whose government has lost effective control of its territory and can no longer perform basic functions — maintaining order, collecting revenue, delivering services — so that authority passes to armed groups or disappears altogether.
- 5
What consequences do failed states have for global order?
Model answer
Ungoverned territory offers a base for armed groups and criminal networks, produces refugee flows that destabilise neighbours, and creates humanitarian emergencies that draw in outside intervention.
- 6
What is a rogue state?
Model answer
A term used for a state judged to disregard international norms — by pursuing prohibited weapons, sponsoring terrorism or repressing its population — and therefore treated as outside the normal rules of diplomacy.
