Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
How do left-wing and right-wing approaches to crime reduction differ in their basic diagnosis?
Model answer
Left-wing approaches trace crime to structural causes such as poverty, inequality and exclusion and therefore aim to change social conditions, while right-wing approaches treat offending as a choice made by inadequately controlled individuals and therefore aim to raise its costs and reduce its opportunities.
- 2
What is social crime prevention?
Model answer
Social crime prevention seeks to remove the root social causes of offending by improving the conditions in which potential offenders grow up, through action on poverty, unemployment, housing, education and family support.
- 3
What does community crime prevention involve?
Model answer
It involves strengthening the informal social controls within a neighbourhood by building residents' capacity to supervise and support each other, through youth provision, community organisations, mediation and local partnerships rather than through policing alone.
- 4
Describe the Perry Pre-School Project and name a British programme built on the same logic.
Model answer
Disadvantaged young children in Michigan were given an intensive enrichment programme with weekly home visits, and long-term follow-up found they had significantly fewer arrests and better employment records as adults than a control group; Sure Start, which offered integrated childcare, health and parenting support in deprived areas, applied the same early-intervention logic in Britain.
- 5
What does a left-wing approach to punishment emphasise?
Model answer
It emphasises rehabilitation and reintegration, using education, training, treatment for addiction and support on release so that the offender can return to a lawful role in the community.
- 6
Define restorative justice.
Model answer
Restorative justice is an approach in which the offender is brought to confront the harm they have caused, takes responsibility for it and makes reparation to the victim and the community, rather than simply receiving a penalty imposed by the state.
