Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a deviant subculture?
Model answer
A group whose shared norms and values depart from those of mainstream society, so that behaviour which earns respect inside the group is disapproved of outside it.
- 2
Distinguish a delinquent subculture from a criminal subculture.
Model answer
A delinquent subculture is largely non-utilitarian, offending for status, excitement and reputation rather than gain, whereas a criminal subculture is organised around making money illegally.
- 3
What does Albert Cohen mean by status frustration?
Model answer
The resentment felt by working-class boys who are measured in school against a middle-class yardstick they cannot meet, and so are denied status by the mainstream.
- 4
How does Cohen say boys respond to status frustration?
Model answer
They turn mainstream values upside down and build a subculture in which vandalism, truancy, fighting and defiance earn respect, creating an alternative status hierarchy in which they can succeed.
- 5
What is an illegitimate opportunity structure?
Model answer
Cloward and Ohlin's term for the access a neighbourhood provides to criminal role models, networks and know-how, which shapes what kind of deviance is actually available to young people there.
- 6
Name the three subcultures Cloward and Ohlin identified, and the conditions that produce each.
Model answer
Criminal subcultures form where a settled adult criminal hierarchy offers an apprenticeship in profitable crime; conflict subcultures form where no such hierarchy exists and status is won through violence and territory; retreatist subcultures form among those who fail in both the legitimate and the illegitimate structures and turn to drugs.
