Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    Define social control.

    Model answer

Social control is the range of ways in which a society regulates behaviour so that its members conform to accepted norms and values.

  2. 2

What is a sanction, and what is the difference between a positive and a negative one?

    Model answer

A sanction is a reward or punishment used to encourage conformity: positive sanctions such as praise, prizes or promotion reward conformity, while negative sanctions such as fines, ridicule or imprisonment punish deviance.

  3. 3

    What is formal social control?

    Model answer

Formal social control is the regulation of behaviour through written rules and laws, enforced by official agencies that have recognised authority and can impose specified penalties.

  4. 4

    What is informal social control?

    Model answer

Informal social control is the regulation of behaviour through unwritten social pressure such as approval, disapproval, gossip, ridicule and exclusion, applied by the people around us rather than by official bodies.

  5. 5

State the role of the police in formal social control.

    Model answer

The police are the state's front-line enforcement agency, deterring and detecting crime, investigating offences and arresting suspects so that offenders can be brought before the courts.

  6. 6

How does the law and legal system contribute to social control?

    Model answer

The law sets out formally which behaviours are forbidden and what penalties follow, providing the codified framework that the other formal agencies interpret and enforce.
