- 3 things to know
- Component 03
Overview
Recall questions on social democratic views and comprehensive schooling, New Right views and Chubb and Moe, liberal, radical and Marxist feminist views of education, functionalist, Marxist and New Right views of education and work, vocational education, T Levels and the apprenticeship levy, Finn and Cohen's criticisms, and parity of esteem.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Define vocational education and name two vocational routes introduced in Britain after 1988.
What are T Levels, and what does the apprenticeship levy do?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is the central concern of the social democratic view of education?
Model answer
Social democrats want education to widen equality of opportunity, and they argue the state must intervene deliberately because talent will otherwise be wasted by poverty and disadvantage.
- 2
Why did social democratic thinkers press for comprehensive schooling?
Model answer
They argued that selecting children at eleven wrote off large numbers of able working-class pupils and squandered the nation's pool of talent, both unfairly and at a cost to the economy.
- 3
What do New Right thinkers see as the fundamental fault of a state-run school system?
Model answer
They argue a state monopoly leaves schools answerable to officials rather than to the families who use them, so there is no pressure to improve and standards drift.
- 4
Chubb and Moe argue for competition between schools, yet the New Right also backs a compulsory national curriculum. How is that consistent?
Model answer
They want the state out of the day-to-day running of schools so parents can act as consumers and force weak schools to improve, but they still want the state to guarantee standards and transmit a shared national culture, which the curriculum delivers.
- 5
How do liberal feminists explain girls' position in education, and what do they propose?
Model answer
They argue girls were held back by sexist attitudes and unequal provision, and that continued reform — equal access, positive role models and monitoring of results — will steadily strip the remaining barriers away.
- 6
What do radical feminists say remains patriarchal about schooling?
Model answer
They point to male dominance of senior leadership, the marginalising of women's achievements in what is taught, the channelling of girls into 'feminine' subjects, and the sexual harassment girls routinely face in school.
